The eponymous head of McNamara Engineering and Stephanie Dobbs' boss, McNamara's entire career and company are riding on the California Bullet Train with him. McNamara dislikes anything in the way of public confrontation and bad publicity, but is eventually persuaded, after nearly being decapitated by a broken brake pad, to order the evacuation of the train to prevent massive loss of life. Although not stated explicitly, the project's failure presumably ruined him, financially and as a businessman.
